Nobody Lives Here Any More

I remember this farm, from when we lived in Maine and from visits to the area since. It's near the Center Lovell Inn, on a high stretch of Route 5 that looks out over the White Mountains. This farm has the view, the fields, the barn, the stone walls, everything that makes a Maine farm.

And yet, nobody lives there.

At least that's what one man said, who stopped to talk while I painted.

Sometimes these encounters are charming and fun. Sometimes they are not. This man scared me a little, with his haphazard and repetitive sentences that started nowhere and ended nowhere else. I was glad I was on a major road, and shortly after he left, promising to come back, I packed up and left, too.

That unsettling encounter aside, the farm is serene and gorgeous and simple, and beckoning, and I feel I got a lot of those feelings into this painting.

What do you think?

This is just beautiful Carrie. I love the palette you used and the feeling it evokes. It feels like it's just waiting for the new owners to move in and love the place again. Be careful out there painting all alone. If you're up this way, call me 516 695-0758 and we'll go paint together.

It's hard to judge the painting now. The poignant title and story of the man who I felt sorry for has tinged the painting with sadness. This perhaps shows that an artwork isn't just paint on a surface; it's its story too.

Hello Carrie, I just wanted to comment that I really like this painting. The wide narrow landscape is great. I think the depth of the color and the highlight in the center drew my attention. It looks like the flash from the camera is the exact spot the highlight is, was that intentional?

Hey, Brandon, thanks for the comment. It's great to hear from you, and I am glad you like the painting. I shot it with light from a window, and that highlight is just glare. I need to reshoot it, I was just too tired to do it right. Sigh.
