Yesterday, my friend Susan and I went to my friend Sharon's house and we painted goats! Sharon and her husband have a small herd, which they keep mostly as pets. In the past, they sold them for meat, but I think that's mostly done now. Penelope and her pals have a great life in a pretty little field , and they have warm houses and lots of friends and seem extremely happy. And I think that if you're going to have goats, you want happy goats!

Dog of the Day

It's Puffy! Puffy falls raptly, passionately and totally in love with things and sometimes people, on a revolving basis. For a while, she was in love with a small wooden footstool we had, and could not be separated from it. Then, it was a piece of cardboard that had fallen to the floor. Then, it was me, and she was cloyingly clingy. Then it was a big cardboard box. Then a series of small cardboard boxes. Now, this letter box. And I do believe it's a federal offense for me to have this box at home - and probably a hanging offense for Puffy to be in love with it!

As Hurricane Irma heads across the ocean toward Florida, Hurricane Carrie is getting ready for a show in Durham, NC, and a painting trip to New England!

I had a lovely time at CenterFest last year, in Durham, NC, and had good sales, too, and of course, I'm hoping for a repeat. This year, my friend, the amazing jeweler Cynthia Battista (check out her work here) will also be at the show, and that's great. It's always fun to have friends at a show.

CenterFest is Sept. 16-17, in downtown Durham. There will be about 150 artists, and music, activities and food. The festival is gated, and while entry is fee, the Durham Arts Council, which sponsors the show, hopes for a $5 donation at the gates. It's the group's main fund-raiser, and from what I see and read, it's an active, vital group, important in the artistic and spiritual landscape of Durham. For more information, please click here.

My final show of the summer is the Neptune Festival, on the Boardwalk at Virginia Beach, Sept. 29-Oct. 1.

Salt Marsh Morning

Salt Marsh Morning

This is the the first of the paintings destined for the 2018 Wachapreague calendar. I think it's fitting that it's our lovely salt marsh, on a clear, bright spring morning, before the world has woken up.

The marsh is what drew me first to Wachapreague. I arrived on an October afternoon, and the thick, golden light had illuminated the marsh, below a sky so clear, so tender blue, it made my heart ache.

Right now, the marsh is a brilliant, soft green, and the water shimmering turquoise. I will paint it soon, in its summer glory. Then will come the fall, when the grass turns deep gold, and the dark boggy earth seems to be at its richest. Winter and spring look much the same on the marsh, as everything sinks in and down in the thin gray light, and all that is living in the marsh rests and gathers energy for the growth and thrill that is the summer here on the Eastern Shore.

I'VE BEEN AWAY, at shows up and down the East Coast, and all the way out to Minneapolis and back. I had a great time, met lots of people, sold lots of paintings, and made some new friends. Here are some happy buyers from my trip!

Even though we don't get out on the water much, I love living near it and watching the boats. The small boat on the left has been sitting in the mud of the salt marsh for at least five years. The boat on the right was just motoring in after a day's fishing. The light, and the sunrises and sunsets on the Eastern Shore are often magical, tinged with pink and gold and tender blues.

One from the Road 

I'm traveling right now, on the Big Skies Painting Trip. As I write this, I'm in Sheriden, Wyoming, about to head north and west into Montana. I've been having a great trip, and I'm happy with the paintings I've been making for my sponsors. This country is so huge, and so incredibly beautiful, it's a delight and an exciting pleasure to wander, explore and paint!

It was a cool early morning in the spring, and I was heading out of town to a show. Don't remember which day, what show or anything... But a Main Street resident who still takes the paper had gone out to get it, wearing her robe, and it struck me as a painting and a story and a glimpse into life in a quiet little town.

One from the Road

(I'm on the Big Skies Painting Trip)

In Breezewood, PA, Interstate 70 does a very strange thing. It comes to a complete stop! You're driving along, la-di-dah, at 70 mph, and then all of a sudden, you see signs saying "Expressway Ends." You get to a light, come to a complete stop, take a turn, and then you get on an entry ramp and get back on the highway. Bizarre. I would love to know what politics or persuasion or just exactly what conspired to make this happen!

Dog of the Day

It's Scout, our dogs' favorite dog-about-town. Scout takes Bill (seated, in rocking chair) for a walk around Wachapreague pretty much every day. Scout ambles along, making sure Bill gets his exercise ... and also making sure that our dogs get their daily dose of thrilling excitement and obscenely loud barking. She's a wiz at it, that's for sure! It's our dogs' favorite time of day!

This is another of the 12 paintings in the 2017 Wachapreague calendar, which you can buy for $19, either from me, here (expect delivery in November...) or on site, at Seaside Antiques and Art in Wachapreague. I have to say, I think the calendar came out great! There are paintings of the salt marsh, paintings of boats at the dock and in the harbor, paintings of trees in flower around town - and this one, of John and JD, our public works staff. They mow the town property, put up flags on some of the holidays, and collect the brush and the trash. And watch out, generally, for everyone in town.

I'm heading West, on the Big Skies Painting Trip... On my way, I stopped in Elkhart, Indiana, 

to see the RV Hall of Fame. Here's one of the amazing, fun RVs I saw there!

 It's the smallest Airstream ever made, and is amazingly cool.

Dog of the Day

It's Lulu, just home after TWO WEEKS at the vet's. She and Doc were neutered a few weeks ago, and just by wriggling, twisting and scratching, Lulu managed to rip her incision open and tear stitches out from deep inside. So our great vet came in on Sunday, sewed her up and then kept her, sedated and caged for two weeks. We have to keep her quiet at home for two more weeks, and believe you me, that's a tall order, but Peter is working hard at it. Lulu is worth it!
